Radiation and Thermal Analysis of Superconducting Quadrupoles in the Interaction Region of Linear Collider*
نویسندگان
چکیده
CERN has encouraged the US-LARP collaboration to participate in Phase I of the LHC luminosity upgrade by analyzing the benefits gained by using Nb3Sn technology to replace the functionality of select NbTi magnets that CERN is committed to construct. Early studies have shown that the much higher gradients (shorter magnetic lengths) and temperature margins (quench stability) of Nb3Sn magnets compared to their NbTi counterparts is favorable -allowing the insertion of additional absorbers between Q1 and Q2, for example. This paper discusses the relative merits of the NbTi and Nb3Sn options. Work supported by Fermi Research Alliance, LLC under contract No. DE-AC02-07CH11359 with the U.S. Department of Energy. Presented paper at the 11 European Particle Accelerator Conference, Genoa, Italy, June 23-27, 2008. Work supported in part by US Department of Energy contract DE-AC02-76SF00515. SLAC-PUB-14636

متن کاملRHIC IR Quadrupoles and Field Quality State of the Art in Superconducting Accelerator Magnets
The interaction region (IR) quadrupoles [1] for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) [2] are the best field quality superconducting magnets ever built for any major accelerator. This field quality is primarily achieved with the help of eight tuning shims [3] that remove the residual errors from a magnet after it is built and tested. These shims overcome the limitations from the typical to...
متن کاملTuning Shims for High Field Quality in Superconducting Magnets
−−A high field quality in quadrupoles for the interaction region is crucial to the luminosity performance of high energy colliders such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The field quality in magnets is limited in part by manufacturing tolerances in the parts and assembly. A tuning shim method has been developed to reduce the relative field errors (∆Β/Β) from ~10 to ~10 at 2/3 of th...
متن کاملMitigating Radiation Loads in Nb3Sn Quadrupoles for LHC Upgrades
Challenging beam-induced energy deposition issues are addressed for the next generation of the LHC high-luminosity interaction regions based on Nb3Sn quadrupoles. Detailed MARS15 Monte Carlo energy deposition calculations are performed for various coil diameters, thicknesses and materials of the inner absorber at a field gradient of 200 T/m. It is shown that using the inner absorber made of tun...
متن کاملThe in#uence of fringe "elds on particle dynamics in the Large Hadron Collider
The need of maximizing luminosity in the Large Hadron Collider requires the use of high-gradient quadrupoles in the interaction region. These quadrupoles combine relatively short length, large aperture, and short focal length with a rather peculiar con"guration of the return coils, all of which enhances the relevance of their fringe "eld e!ects. The in#uence of resulting nonlinearities on the d...
